Visit of Pen-y-ffordd Bowling Club

In was great to receive our good friends from Pen-y-ffordd Bowling Club who visited us on Sunday 15th August.

The day started in customary fashion with their coach getting lost en route!!

During the day 51 bowlers took part in a triples competition which was won by the Pen-y-ffordd team of Bert Wells, Margaret Jones and Joe O'Shea. In the final they defeated Tom Emery, Joan Laney and Ann Griffiths of Westlands.

The other competition was the annual match for the Jim Spragg Trophy. This was won by Westlands; this victory was somewhat overdue as it was only our second success in 14 years of competition!

Club Success in Burgess Cup Final

The Final of the 2003 Competition was played at Clough Hall Park on Sunday 7th   September

Our Newcastle League No. 1 Team defeated Chesterton Park in a very close contest.

After the first 4 ends Westlands led by 9 chalks.

This margin was maintained over the next 2 completed games.

Chesterton players led in both the final games and the outcome remained in doubt.

The next result saw our margin reduced to just 4 points and at this point the final Chesterton player led 20 - 17.

Kevin Stonier then scored a match winning double which gave us a winning margin of just 2 points (146 - 144).

Congratulations to Ron Laney (Captain) and all the team on winning the Burgess Cup.
