A Successful 2008 Season

Club teams had a fairly good season in their Leagues.
In their debut season in the Congleton League we finished R/up in Division 2; congratulations Ian Atherton and his team (photo).
Our Thursday Parks No. 2 team finished as Runner-up in Division 4; well done Steve Brain and his team.
Saturday Parks Division 1 (photo) and Stoke-on-Trent Division 5 teams both finished in 3rd position.
The Stoke-on-Trent Division 4 team finished in 4th place and Steve Howe did very well to come 2nd in the League averages.
Several of our established Juniors were too old to play in this year's Junior League but the side did well to achieve 4th place.

It was Roy's first win in the event but a second Men's Doubles Title for Steve, his previous win being in 2004.

Many thanks for Steve Brain for organising the competition and to all those who helped with card marking etc.
Steve was very grateful to Trish Hyatt who helped run the event and Jean House who provided tea throughout the afternoon.

Westlands Waterloo Trip 2008

Barney's Bunch win Waterloo Trophy

Our 2008 competition at the Waterloo Hotel was on Thursday 25th September. This was our 13th visit and the weather was again very kind to us. The green was in excellent condition which seemed to favour the more talented teams!

The Competition was won by Barney's Bunch whose only previous win was on our first visit to the Waterloo in 1996.

This year's runners-up were the legendary Tony's Touchers with last year's shock winners Steve's Squad back in 3rd spot.

Initial rounds were played at London Road, Trent-Vale and Florence Tennis & Bowling Club (2 greens) 4 Qualifiers from each green progressed to the Finals which were held at Oakhill Bowling Club.

Ian Atherton qualified at Florence and joined a strong looking line-up at Oakhill.
In his quarter final match he had a great 21 - 17 win against Mark Ferris to reach the Semi-Final.
At this stage he lost 21 - 15 to the eventual winner Darren Clutton (Meir Social).

As a Semi-Finalist Ian qualified to play in the British Parks Individual Merit. This competition will be held at Rochdale on Sunday August 10th (10am start).

Success for Steve Howe in "Spring Waterloo" Competition.

Congratulations to Steve Howe on reaching the last 64 of the 2008 "Spring Waterloo" Competition.

On his first visit to Blackpool Steve won 2 games and so qualified for the Sub Finals.

In his first game of the Sub Finals Steve beat Joe Bradbury. This was a good performance as Joe had won the Waterloo Championships in 1971 and had been runner-up in 1995.

In the last 64 Steve lost to Bob Hitchen, runner up in the Waterloo in 1997. Bob therefore qualified for the Finals Day when he beat Tommy Johnston and Andrew Cairns before going out of the competition which was won by Dave McDermott.
