Major shock at The Waterloo

The annual Club trip (our 11th) to the Waterloo Hotel, Blackpool was on 28th September.
The rank outsiders for the event, Terry's Team, pulled off a major shock by taking the coveted Waterloo Trophy.
Title favourites, Tony's Touchers, had a somewhat disappointing day and finished just outside the top 4.
Unfortunately, Terry's Team are not considered sufficiently photogenic to appear on the site.

League Average Awards for Adam Jackson and Marie Brain

Adam Jackson topped the Averages in Division 1 of the Saturday Junior League.
Adam dropped just 1 point in the 18 games he played during the season (21-20 loss at Birches Head Hotel).
Marie Brain won the Division 2 Average Prize in the Ladies Thursday League.
In the 22 games Marie played, she dropped just 15 points.

Todd Ridge retains Parks Doubles Title.

14 Pairs took part in the Staffs Parks Doubles which were held at Oakhill Bowling Club on Sunday 27th August 2006.

Todd Ridge partnered Graham Joines to retain the title they had won in 2005. When winning the 2005 Competition, Todd was believed to be the youngest ever winner. He must surely go down as the youngest person ever to retain the title.

In the final Todd and Graham overcame the Westlands pairing of Steve Howe and Bernard Regan.

Another Westlands member in the semi-final was Pete Gannon who, with his partner Alan Stones, lost to Steve and Bernard.

Westlands Juniors help Staffs Parks County win League Championship.

Westlands juniors were very well represented in the Staffs Parks County team which won the 2006 League Championship.

In the home leg at Bucknall Private, Jake Donaldson, Matt Hill, David Hyatt, Ben Jackson, Adam Jackson and Todd Ridge represented the County whilst Chris Jenkins played in the away leg at Swanlincote.
Congratulations to all those who helped in this success.

Westlands retain Kelsall Trophy

The 2006 Newcastle League Cup Finals were held at Clough Hall Park on Sunday 3rd September.

In the Final of the Derek Kelsall Trophy (teams in Div 2) Westlands No.1 beat Wolstanton Private. The Club therefore retained the Trophy which had been won by Westlands No. 2 in 2005.
The team got off to a cracking start by having the first 4 winners and at this point led by 27 chalks. In the next 4 games Wolstanton fought back, with 3 winners, to reduce the winning margin to 14 chalks.

In addition to winning the Division 2 Cup the team were runners up in the League and so promoted into Division 1.

Congratulations to Ash Leeming and his side on a very successful season.

Westlands Mixed Doubles

Held on Sunday 23rd July 2006

The preliminary stage was a  "Round Robin" event with games played over 11 ends.
From this, 4 pairs qualified for the Knock-Out stage.

The Final was also played over 11 ends.  It turned out to be a very close fought and competitive game in which

Janet Mairs and David Hyatt beat Allison Jackson and Rich Jenkins 7 -  6

It was both players' first success in this competition.

In winning, David continued the recent success of Juniors in the Mixed Doubles event (4th Junior winner in 5 years).

The competition was enjoyed by all those taking part. Congratulations to Steve Brain for organising the event and for once again arranging for some great weather.

Staffs Parks Junior Merits

In the 2006 Staffs Parks Junior Merits 3 Westlands bowlers reached the Quarter Finals.

Ben Jackson was the youngest bowler to reach this stage of the Competition and after a great struggle lost 21 - 18 to eventual finalist Craig Podmore.
Our other representatives, Matt Hill and Adam Jackson went on to reach the Semi-Finals.

Saturday Mixed League Success

Congratulations to our "B" Team who, under the captaincy of Norman Thompson, won the 2005 Division 2 Championship. During the latter part of the season, things became very tight but they finally pipped Alsager Golf Club by just 3 points.
The "B" team joined the Mixed League in 2002 when they played in Division 3. When the League was restructured in 2004 they were put in Division 2. In their first season they finished in mid-table and have therefore made considerable progress to win the championship in their second year in the division.
During the season they won 15 of their 20 matches and one notable victory was an important early season success was at Alsager Golf Club. They were the only team to win at Alsager and were also the only team to win away at Westlands "A". I am not certain which win gave Norman and his team the most satisfaction (but I can guess!!).

Success for Todd Ridge in Staffs Parks Doubles

A total of 33 pairs played in the Staffs Parks Doubles Competition which was held at Westlands  on Sunday 25th September.
The event was won by Todd Ridge and Graham Joines, Trent Vale. Todd and Graham bowled consistently well in all their 5 games.
In the last 8 they accounted for Peter Okonski and John Malpass, Wolstanton WMC 21 - 10
In the semi-final they played Harry Walklet and Roy Perry, Trent Vale; in a very tight encounter they pulled off a 21 - 20 win.
In the final they won 21 - 16 against Ray Brammeld and Ben Day, Tunstall Park.
At the age of just 16, Todd is believed to be the youngest ever winner of this competition.
The win crowns a great year for Todd who has been a great asset to our Saturday Junior team and has had an excellent year for the County side.

Westlands Waterloo Day 2005

On September 29th the Club made their 10th  visit to the Waterloo Hotel, Blackpool. The green was in very good condition and everyone enjoyed their bowling at this famous venue.
The Waterloo Trophy was again won by Tony's Touchers; this outstanding team have now won this prestigious trophy on 4 occasions.
By popular demand, and to satisfy our President, a photo of the Touchers is now available online.
