Westlands Waterloo Trip 2012
Ian's Army win the coveted Waterloo Trophy

Our 17th consecutive annual competition at the Waterloo Hotel was on Wednesday 3rd October.

The 2012 event was closely contested throughout, with the main contenders being Ian's Army, Bill's Buddies and the legendary Tony's Touchers.
The lead changed hands on numerous occasions and after completing 8 of the planned 11 sessions, Bill's Buddies, the 2011 winners,  held a lead of 14 points. The next session was a disaster for the Buddies who found themselves 15 points behind Ian's Army.
The heavens then opened (and stayed open) so the final 2 sessions were abandoned. At this stage Ian's Army were in the lead and were awarded the title. Some felt this unfair as the Touchers were unable to field their 3 formidable triples outfits, who had been held in reserve. However their captain graciously conceded the title to the Army as this was their very first win in the event. Bill's Buddies were 2nd and another bronze medal went into the Touchers trophy cabinet; this makes their tally 4 Gold, 3 Silver and 3 Bronze, quite incredible! Graham's Group were in the red throughout the day and did not benefit from the expertise of their illustrious leader.
The defection of Barney's Bunch provided the opportunity for Steve's Strugs to claim the wooden spoon which they comfortably achieved.

Westlands win Saturday Parks Division 1 Championship

After a great season, our Saturday 1st team, captained by John Jenkins, captured the  2012 Saturday Division 1 Parks championship
The team lost only 2 of their 20 matches.

The title was clinched at Middleport Park in the final match of the season. Prior to the game Middleport had won all home games and Westlands all away games.

Middleport won the final match but Westlands secured enough points to win the title.

This is the 4th time the Club have won the title following success in 2000, 2001 and 2004
Many congratulations to John and the team

Graham Joines wins
2012 Bert Lewis Over 60s Merit Competition

Congratulations to Graham on winning this competition.
The event has been contested since 1989 and Graham is the first Westlands bowler to win the trophy.

Graham played his qualifying rounds at London Road B.C.

Eight players from the qualifiers went on to play in the Final Rounds, held on Florence No. 2 green.
In the Final, Graham beat Reg Holt, Goldenhill, 21 -19 after a great tussle.

Ron House made Life Member
Friday 20th January 2012 - Ron House made Life Member of Westlands Bowling Club

At the 2012 Club  AGM, Ron House was made Life Member of the Club. When proposing him for this award, Mike Rushworth, President, referred to the amount of work Ron had done for the Club over many years. Since 2000 he had been Auditor and from 2002 he had also taken on the role of Greens Manager.
In the past few years ill health had limited Ron's bowling activities but he had continued to accept both these administrative positions.

From Club records, Ron would appear to be the 12th person to be made a Life Member since 1955 (no earlier records available).

Westlands Waterloo Trip 2011
Bill's Buddies win Waterloo Trophy

Our 16th consecutive annual competition at the Waterloo Hotel was on Wednesday 28th September.
The weather was fantastic with temperatures reaching an unseasonal 25oC.

At the start of the competition, Bill's Buddies, rookies in this event, built up a useful lead. However, the talent of the more experienced teams gradually came to the fore and the competition developed into a very close contest.
During the day, the lead changed hands several times and 4 of the 5 teams had aspirations of winning the coveted trophy. The only no-hopers were Barney's Bunch who repeated their abysmal showing of 2010 (and many other years).
With 2 Sessions remaining Terry's Team, seeking to achieve the first hat-trick in this event, were 11 points ahead of the legendary Touchers with Bill's Buddies a further point behind.
After the penultimate session Terry's Team led the Buddies by 5 points with the Touchers in hot pursuit. At the end of the final game Bill's Buddies, novices and rank outsiders, were on 25 points, 3 ahead of Terry's Team. Tony's Touchers (4 times winners) were in bronze medal position following their silver in 2010.
The Buddies were making their debut and few would deny that their success owed much to their good fortune on the day. Their skipper Bill Oldham has performed at a higher level (with The Touchers).
(Taking 2 photographs is nothing to do with the photogenic attraction of those featured. It was simply thought that some may not believe their eyes at seeing a single picture of those in the winning team.)

Westlands Mixed Doubles
Held on Sunday 3 July 2011

Westlands Ladies B.C. and Westlands B.C. joined forces for the annual Mixed Pairs Competition.
The weather was perfect and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day.
The competition was run on as a "Round Robin" with each pair playing 4 games.
Top honours went to Val Curley and Graham Atherton.
Neither Val nor Graham had won this event previously and in Val's case success came in her first season of competitive bowling, a really good achievement.
Runners-up were Ian Atherton and Chris Brain.

Many thanks to Ian for organising the event and to everyone who helped with providing refreshments.
